Found just after entry through the Drake House’s side door, the Harbinger Library abounds with books, artifacts and artwork from a variety of ages. Featured on the west-facing wall is Julian Scott’s enormous work, “The Death of General Sedgewick,” a painting inspired by his time serving during the Civil War.

The dining room at the Drake House once proudly hosted General George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, who used the house’s strategic location to plan the Battle of Short Hills. Their meeting took place in this very dining room, which explains the presence of their life-size cardboard counterparts set beside the fireplace.

Stills from an archival shoot at the Drake House. The Victorian Parlor room was a nineteenth century addition to the original Drake House, built in 1746. The room is full of history, containing countless antiques and stories for each.

During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington visited the Drake House with Alexander Hamilton to plan the battle of Short Hills. While he may not have actually slept in the bedroom at the Drake House, it is unofficially but affectionately dedicated to his memory (and who knows, he may have taken a nap).

This kitchen dates back to the late 1700’s and features a beautiful hearth complete with period utensils and fixtures. The wood floors are original to the house, and tell the story of the house with each creak and crack.
